What’s IVF?

IVF is one of the most effective infertility treatments available today. It’s an extremely safe procedure, and is used by thousands of couples and women worldwide. In IVF, doctors help the sperm fertilize the egg outside the body. Then the fertilized egg is implanted into the woman’s uterus, with the goal of developing into a baby.

IVF makes the most complicated parts of reproduction much easier: it helps the sperm reach and penetrate the egg, it enables doctors to oversee the fertilized egg’s early growth, and it allows doctors to help the egg implant in the uterus.

1. Preparation & Monitoring

To help ensure a successful retrieval of multiple eggs, the woman may receive fertility drugs to mimic the body’s natural hormones. Then, her ovaries and hormone levels will be carefully monitored to determine when her body is ready for egg retrieval.

2. Egg Retrieval

On the day of retrieval, the woman is lightly sedated, and an ultrasound probe is inserted into her vagina to identify follicles. Then a thin needle is inserted into an ultrasound guide, gently passing through her vagina and into her follicles to retrieve her eggs.

3. Fertilization

The male provides a semen sample, and his sperm are separated from his semen in a lab. His active sperm are then combined with her eggs in a laboratory dish. Within under 24 hours, it can be determined if the IVF process worked.

4. Implantation

To ensure they’re as strong and healthy as possible, viable embryos are first incubated and observed over the next couple of days. Finally, the embryos are transferred into the woman’s uterus, to continue developing. If the IVF treatment was successful, the woman will test positive for pregnancy.
